Recommended Planting
Instructions:
1) After you remove
the plants from your vehicle, remove any twine, burlap or plastic they
may have been covered with for the ride home and plant them as soon
as possible. If not planting immediately, place the plants in a shady
area and maintain moisture daily until planting time.
2) Dig holes for the plants 1 foot wider than the root ball.
The depth of the hole for container plants should allow 1-2 inches of
the plant's root ball to be above ground.
3) Remove plants from containers. Break up the root system with
your hands or shovel. Mix soil amendments with existing soil from the
hole in a 50/50 mix. Unless absolutely necessary, do not completely
replace the existing soil. Tamp with foot or shovel. Add the soil mix,
then pull back all of the dirt from the trunk of the plant to form a
water ring. Firm the soil with your hands or the back of your shovel.
When finished, you should be able to see the top of the root ball with
your water ring around it.
4) Plants that are balled and burlapped should have all string
completely removed and as much of the burlap on the top of the ball
removed as possible. Do not remove the wire basket completely or it
may loosen the root ball, stressing the plant. Bend the wire cage down
along the sides of the root ball so as not to stick above ground level
when planting. Make sure the root ball is at least 1-2" above ground
level. Make water ring as above.
5) Staking is recommended for trees in an extremely windy site
or on a steep slope. All evergreens should be staked until they can
establish their new root system. If stakes are used, all materials should
be removed within one year to avoid girdling of the tree, which may
result in death.
6) Add 2 to 3" of mulch to the planting area, making sure
you only mulch the top of the root ball lightly. Do not place the mulch
directly up to the stem/trunk, rather, keep it back 6 to 8 inches to
avoid potential insect/rodent problems.
7) Water the plant in well. Put your hose on a trickle, and allow
it to fill up the water ring several times. Most plants need at least
1" of water each week; check every few days to see if additional
water is needed. The soil should be moist, not wringing wet, nor drying
out.
8) Plants will not need fertilizing at this point. You may want
to use a product such as Roots to stimulate root growth. Most granular
fertilizers should be avoided until the plant root system has had a
year to get established.
